KAIST Spinout · Portable Specimen CT
The Answer in the Room.
MarginX is a portable CT scanner in development, designed to turn an excised surgical specimen into a 3D margin view in 6 minutes — right there in the operating room, before the next step in surgery is decided.
The problem
The question was never whether you removed it. It’s whether the margin is clear.
In breast-conserving surgery, that answer usually isn’t known until well after the patient has left the table — because it’s hard to tell, mid-surgery, whether cancer remains at the edge of what was removed.
Today — off-site pathology
-
1
Excise specimen
Tissue is removed and placed in transport.
-
2
Send to pathology
Specimen leaves the room for imaging or sectioning elsewhere.
-
3
Wait for a result
Frozen section analysis can take 15–60 minutes depending on complexity, and 2D imaging still can't show margin depth.
-
4
Reoperate, if needed
A positive margin found later can mean a second procedure entirely.
With MarginX — in the room
-
1
Excise specimen
No change to the surgical step itself.
-
2
Scan, table-side
MarginX captures a full 3D volume without leaving the room.
-
3
Get the answer
A reconstructed 3D margin view is ready for the surgeon in 6 minutes.
-
4
Close, with confidence
Act on the imaging before the patient leaves the table — the specimen still goes to pathology as usual.
Published studies put the reoperation rate for positive margins after breast-conserving surgery in roughly this range — on top of the hundreds of thousands of these procedures performed in the U.S. each year. Range reflects published surgical literature on BCS reoperation rates; CorbiT has not conducted an independent epidemiological study.
The product
MarginX
A portable CT scanner engineered to move CT-quality specimen imaging from the pathology suite to wherever the answer is needed.
Concept rendering — MarginX is in active R&D; final hardware form factor, branding, and labeling may change.
CT-grade imaging, small enough for the OR
-
Portable, roughly 20 kgComparable specimen CT systems run 80–120 kg and simply can't be brought into an operating room.
-
True 3D reconstructionDesigned to pinpoint where a lesion sits relative to the resection margin, down to fine calcifications (pending clinical validation).
-
Shielded chamber design — patent pendingA proprietary shielding approach, so MarginX is designed to avoid needing a dedicated lead-lined room.
-
Built for speedFrom scan to a 3D margin answer in 6 minutes.
